The Legend of Robin Hood
I've wanted to write a Robin Hood play for years, and Theatre UAB's tour groups gave me the chance. With five talented actors playing multiple roles, it's toured the state to great acclaim -- and now you can perform this script, too.
Fair Warning: Does the script call for fights with real swords? Yes, it does. Does it also have a real quarterstaff fight? Yes, it does. And does it require that you have actors who can play multiple roles -- including one really big guy to play Little John? Well, of course it does.
But I bet you're up to the challenge of staging the fights! I bet you have versatile, protean, highly professional actors! If so, then you'll find this play plenty of fun for actors and audience alike. There are plenty of opportunities in the show for audience interaction -- including a trial where the Sherrif of Nottingham tries to get the audience to join him in condemning Robin Hood as a criminal -- which, after all, is what he is. But Robin also appeals to the audience and begs them to side with him -- because sometimes doing the right thing means going outside of the rules!

NOTTINGHAM You admit you have broken the law! That is enough to condemn you, because above all, we know our laws must be kept! Say it with me, everyone: "Our laws must be kept!"
ROBIN HOOD I agree, my lord. Our nation is only as strong as its laws, so our laws must be kept. But they must be kept by everyone, not just a few. What are good men supposed to do when their leaders are nothing better than common thieves? Must we not then steal from the greedy rich and give to the poor?
NOTTINGHAM Again you accuse me in a vain attempt to defend yourself!
ROBIN HOOD I do! We know where your wealth has come from! You tax the poorest people in our land heavily, but ask nothing of your wealthiest friends! Isn't that right?!
NOTTINGHAM Citizens! Nobles! Are we going to allow a common criminal to confuse this trial? To turn this into a debate?
ROBIN HOOD It's too late, Nottingham. The people of our land already know the truth. They know you steal from them, make unfair laws against them, and have now stooped so low as to kidnap the King's own son in the hope of making yourself King!
NOTTINGHAM THAT'S ENOUGH! The trial is concluded and I find you guilty! Guilty on all charges and the sentence is DEATH!
ROBIN HOOD And when is this sentence to be carried out?
NOTTINGHAM Now! Right this minute!
ROBIN HOOD You're going to kill me? Unarmed and in chains? You're even more of a coward than I thought!
NOTTINGHAM The High Sheriff of Nottingham is afraid of no one!
ROBIN HOOD Then release me and give me a fair chance to defend myself.
NOTTINGHAM I will release you -- but I warn you, there is no such thing as a fair defence against me... for with a sword in my hand I am unbeatable! |
